When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord – Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
From a critic of Christianity
First, it’s usually a good idea to leave the smiting to God. He usually knows more accurately who deserves to be smitten. God might smite you if you smite them and they don’t deserve it.
Second, are you Jewish? The only people God commanded to sacrifice animals like this were Jews.
Third, are you Christian? Some Christians get confused and think that the first half of the Bible was written to them. It was certainly written to help them. But it wasn’t written to describe how they were to live. The New Testament is that book. And it tells Christian’s they don’t need to sacrifice animals any more.
Last, I think the ‘altar of sacrifice’ was supposed to be in the temple precinct. It is a big compound and so the neighbours should be a long way from the burning animal. You haven’t built your own altar have you? God doesn’t like that and smote a few people who tried it.
