There are several summaries of godly living in the scriptures. They are a good reminder of what should be at the core of our daily lives.

  • Fear of God
  • Love God above all – keep his commandments
  • Love people as much as we love ourself
  • Control our tongue
  • Help those in physical need
  • Avoiding worldly corruptions

Jeremiah 9:23-24 Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24. but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.

Matthew 22:36-40 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? 37. And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38. This is the great and first commandment. 39. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

John 14:23-24. Jesus answered him, If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

James 1:26-27 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

1 Peter 3:10-12. For Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11. let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
