I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
From a critic of Christianity
It’s hard to determine a fair price without knowing a few things:
- What daily rate in general do girls of her age get paid presently?
- What is her skill level? If she is skilled you could ask for more.
- How healthy is she? If she is quite healthy you could ask for more.
Of course, you must be very desperate to consider taking such a course of action. Do you not have family that can help you?
And what country do you live in? This is usually only necessary in countries that don’t have a social safety net and where the alternatives are desperate poverty or death.
Or perhaps a better question is, what century are you living in? Social welfare provided through governments have been commonplace for 100s of years.
But I am very sympathetic to your plight. Obviously you don’t want your daughter to die. Nor do you want any of your other children to die. There is no government or family to help you. So what other options do you have? I pray you can redeem her from slavery as soon as you and your family are back on your feet financially.
