Saved by faith AND works

The following verses are my attempt to contrast how often salvation by faith and salvation by works is shown in the same book. This is intended to demonstrate that the Epistle of James is not the only book that promotes this idea:

Jas 2:24 ESV  You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

With regard to ‘works’,

  1. I have included verses that state positively that eternal life is received or inherited or worked for.
  2. And I have included passages that state the idea negatively – that people are condemned for not doing the right thing or for doing the wrong thing.

Romans

By faith

Rom 3:28 ESV  For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Rom 5:1 ESV  Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

By works

Rom 2:6-8 ESV  He will render to each one according to his works:  7  to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;  8  but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

Galatians

By faith

Gal 2:20-21 ESV  I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  21  I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

By works

Gal 6:7-9 ESV  Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.  8  For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.  9  And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Ephesians

By faith

Eph 2:8-9 ESV  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,  9  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

By works

Eph 5:5-7 ESV  For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.  6  Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.  7  Therefore do not become partners with them;

Eph 2:10 ESV  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Titus

By faith

Tit 3:4-7 ESV  But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,  5  he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,  6  whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,  7  so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

By works

Tit 3:8-11 ESV  The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.  9  But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.  10  As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him,  11  knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

Hebrews

By faith

Heb 3:17-19 ESV  And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?  … 19  So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

By works

Heb 3:17-19 ESV  And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?  18  And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

James

By works and faith

Jas 2:24-26 ESV  You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.  25  And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?  26  For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

1 John

By faith

1Jn 5:10-12 ESV  Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.  11  And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  12  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

By works

1Jn 3:24 ESV  Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

1Jn 4:12-13 ESV  No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.  13  By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

The Gospel of John

By faith

Joh 3:15-18 ESV  that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.  16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  17  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.  18  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Joh 3:36 ESV  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
