The judgment of Jesus

Conclusions

  1. Jesus is the judge. His words / the law will be the rule by which people are judged.
  2. Often ‘God’ is also spoken of as the judge. This I believe to be a result of Jesus being a member of the Godhead. So it is right to say God judges and Jesus judges.
  3. The judgment metered is just and right.
  4. There is a particular ‘Day of Judgment’ coming.
    1. God’s wrath is revealed on that day.
    2. Rewards will be given on that day.
  5. We must give an account of every word, deed and motive.
  6. We are judged according to what we have done.
  7. There is an ‘hour of judgment’ coming which seems to be separate to the Day Of Judgment.
  8. In various senses there is already a present judgment happening on the world.
  9. The Gospel of John must be read closely to understand what Jesus meant when referring to judgment.
    1. In it Jesus says all judgment is given to Him, the Father judges no one, that Jesus came into the world for judgment, Jesus judges with the Father, there is ‘One’ who judges, Jesus judges no one, Jesus’ words judge people, judgment can be avoided

Jesus is the judge

Act 17:31 ESV  because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

2Co 5:10 ESV  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

2Ti 4:1 ESV  I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

2Ti 4:8 ESV  Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Jas 4:12 ESV  There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

Rev 6:10 ESV  They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”

Act 10:42 ESV  And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.

Jesus makes war and judges

Rev 19:11 ESV  Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.

All judgment is given to the Son

Joh 5:22 ESV  For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,

Joh 5:27 ESV  And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

Joh 5:30 ESV  “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

Joh 8:26 ESV  I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”

Jesus came to judge

Joh 9:39 ESV  Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”

Jesus judges with the Father

Joh 8:16 ESV  Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.

Jesus comes with the holy ones to execute judgment

Jud 1:14-15 ESV  It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones,  15  to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Jesus’ words judge people on the last day

Joh 12:48 ESV  The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

Jas 2:12 ESV  So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.

The law will judge people

Rom 2:12 ESV  For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

Jesus judges no one

Joh 8:15 ESV  You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.

Joh 12:47 ESV  If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

God is the judge and He judges justly

Joh 8:50 ESV  Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge.

Rom 3:6 ESV  By no means! For then how could God judge the world?

1Co 5:13 ESV  God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

1Pe 1:17 ESV  And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,

Judgment Day

2Pe 2:4 ESV  For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;
2Pe 2:9 ESV  then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

2Pe 3:7 ESV  But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Jud 1:6 ESV  And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day

A coming judgment

Act 24:25 ESV  And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, “Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.”

God’s wrath revealed on judgment day

Rom 2:5 ESV  But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

Hour of Judgment

Rev 14:7 ESV  And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Give account of every word and deed

Mat 12:36 ESV  I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

Rom 2:16 ESV  on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

1Co 4:5 ESV  Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

The Holy Spirit convicts of judgment

Joh 16:8 ESV  And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

Joh 16:11 ESV  concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

All nations will be judged by God

Rom 2:3 ESV  Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?

Heb 12:23 ESV  and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

1Pe 4:5 ESV  but they [Gentile unbelievers] will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

God’s judgment comes on evil doers

Rom 2:2 ESV  We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

Believers are judged

Rom 14:10 ESV  Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God;

1Co 4:4 ESV  For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.

2Co 5:10 ESV  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Heb 9:27 ESV  And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

Heb 10:30 ESV  For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

1Pe 4:17 ESV  For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

Bible teachers receive a stricter judgment

Jas 3:1 ESV  Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

Believers can have confidence in the day of judgment

1Jn 4:17 ESV  By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.

The sheep are judged

Mat 25:31-33 ESV  “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.  32  Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  33  And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.

Rewards will be given on the day of judgment

‘Babylon’ is judged

Rev 17:1 ESV  Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters,
Rev 18:8 ESV  For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”
Rev 18:10 ESV  They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

Judgment is according to our works

Psa 62:11-12 ESV  Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,  12  and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.

Isa 3:10 ESV  Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

Jer 17:10 ESV  “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

Jer 32:19 ESV  great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man, rewarding each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

Eze 18:30 ESV  “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin.

Mat 16:27 ESV  For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

1Co 3:8 ESV  He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor.

1Co 3:14 ESV  If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.

Gal 6:7-8 ESV  Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.  8  For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

Rev 2:23 ESV  and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.

Judgment in connection with a future reign

Mat 19:28 ESV  Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Luk 22:30 ESV  that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

1Co 6:2 ESV  Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases?

Judgment has already come

Joh 3:19 ESV  And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

Joh 12:31 ESV  Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.

1Co 11:29 ESV  For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
1Co 11:31 ESV  But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
1Co 11:32 ESV  But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

Judgment can be avoided

Joh 5:24 ESV  Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Jas 5:9 ESV  Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.

A resurrection of judgment

Joh 5:29 ESV  and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Judgment is a result of one sin

Rom 5:16 ESV  And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.

Judgment is a fundamental truth

Heb 6:2 ESV  and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

Judgment is fearful

Heb 10:27 ESV  but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.

Don’t judge the law

Jas 4:11 ESV  Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

Judged in the flesh

1Pe 4:6 ESV  For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
